Allergy

Allergy or hypersensitivity occurs when your body's immune system reacts to foreign substances that are typically not harmful to most people. These foreign substances that trigger the immune response are called allergens. Unfortunately, for some, these allergens can provoke bothersome symptoms such as runny nose and skin rash or even lead to life-threatening complications.

The primary step in effectively managing your allergy is identifying and avoiding the allergens causing the problem. Allergy Tests At Home are designed to help you recognize the potential allergy triggers, including food or environmental allergens like dust and animal dander, from the comfort of your home.

When are At-Home Allergy Tests Required?

At-home allergy tests are commonly suggested to evaluate your blood for elevated immunoglobulin levels that indicate an allergy. Some other common reasons for getting an at-home allergy test include:

  • To identify environmental allergens (dust mite, pollen, or animal dander) triggering your symptoms

  • To evaluate the efficacy of your lifestyle changes and allergic medications

  • To analyze your immune response against the most common allergens

  • To check allergen-specific antibodies in your blood sample

  • To assess your risk of developing allergies to certain medications

One may be required to get at-home Allergy Tests if you are showing any one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Itching

  • Sneezing

  • Runny, congested nose

  • Facial swelling

  • Stomach cramps

  • Difficulty in breathing

  • Red, puffy, or watery eyes (conjunctivitis)

  • In-mouth tingling

If unsure of what's causing your uncomfortable symptoms, getting an at-home lab test can help you understand the allergens causing the problem. Preventive measures can then be taken against the allergens, and you can reduce exposure inside and outside your home.

Why are At-Home Allergy Tests Important?

An allergy develops whenever your immune system misidentifies a typically safe substance as a potentially harmful invader. Exposure to an allergen causes the release of several compounds, including histamine, leading to the symptoms of an allergy.

Over time, if untreated, these allergic symptoms can increase the risk of developing into chronic illnesses, including asthma, sinus infections, inflammations, and general susceptibility to infections.

Different at-home allergy tests can help identify different allergens in specific foods or plants. At Metropolis, we provide the following allergy tests that can be ordered at home.

  • IgE Total Antibody Serum

  • Allergy Screening IgE with Phadiatop (For Adults & >5y)

  • Allergy - Drug Panel (Maxi)

  • Allergy Panel - Rhinitis/ Wheezing Basic

  • Allergy Panel - Child Panel

  • Allergy Panel - Food Test

  • Allergy - Adult (Comprehensive) Panel

Each of these allergy tests uses a different approach in detecting specific immunoglobins against particular allergens, thus helping to diagnose potential signs of an allergy.

How is an At-Home Allergy Test Performed?

When you order an alley test at home, a phlebotomist would come to your home to collect your blood sample. You can choose the location and time when you want the blood to be collected. Once the sample is collected, the sample is sent to the nearest lab for further processing.

Time Required for Test Results?

The time to get your test reports can vary depending on the type of allergy test performed. For example, a simple allergy test typically is reported on the same day. In contrast, a complex allergy profiling test may take a few days to two weeks to get your results.

Interpreting Test Results

The test results will generally show whether your blood sample contains any specific immunoglobulin that could indicate an allergy.

These test reports may also show your level of antibodies produced in response to being exposed to the allergen. The higher the level of antibodies, the higher your chance of developing allergy symptoms.

What To Do If You Have a Positive Allergy Result?

If your test results are positive or you're experiencing any allergic symptoms, immediately consult an allergist, dermatologist, or ENT specialist for an appropriate treatment plan.
