Allergy - Non-Vegetarian Panel Test

This is a comprehensive allergy panel done when localizing symptoms and cause of allergy is not clear. Since it is a food related allergy, it commonly causes gastro-intestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, but may even lead to other skin related or respiratory symptoms like: Itching, running nose, sneezing, coughing, shortness of breath , and hives. Certain severe cases may also lead to anaphylactic shock. The test is used to screen for possible allergies due to 10  different non-vegetarian food sources. Based on these results further specific testing is recommended.

The allergy-non-vegetarian panel test is done for the following reasons:

• This is a thorough allergy panel performed when the source of the allergy and the location of the symptoms is unclear.
• To diagnose an allergic reaction and identify the offending allergen, this test also checks for IgE antibodies.
• Given that it is a food allergy, it frequently results in digestive symptoms like diarrhoea, but it can also produce symptoms of the skin or the respiratory system, including hives, itching, runny noses, sneezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
• Anaphylactic shock may also result from some severe cases.
• Ten different non-vegetarian food sources are utilised in the test to check for potential sensitivities.
• To detect and avoid non-vegetarian meals that can trigger allergies.
• Based on these findings, additional diagnosis testing is advised.

Non veg allergy test measures the IgE mediated response to 10 common non-vegetarian food sources. Total IgE levels are also measured. Further tests to a specific allergen will help in further diagnosis.

Non veg allergy test requires a blood sample post exposure to the allergens. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Positive result to an allergen indicates that the person is allergic to it. Increased IgE levels further confirms that. Very often the test may be positive for more than one allergen as well. The further treatment course is decided based on the results. Based on the symptom, age, environmental allergens, and region wise allergens further testing may be required for specific diagnosis. Negative result may require other tests for differential diagnosis

Typically, no special precautions need to be taken for the test. However, we should enquire our doctor about taking precautions like fasting or avoiding certain foods (especially non-vegetarian foods) etc.

The non-vegetarian foods that can cause an allergic reaction include egg white, Egg yolk, Chicken, Cod, fish, shrimp, Pork, Beef, Mutton, etc.
