Total IGE Test Overview

An allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system that causes undesirable reactions to certain substances like food, dust, pollen, drugs or even animal dander. These reactions normally do not occur in others. The substance causing the reaction is an allergen. Immunoglobin E is an antibody that the body produces in case of an allergic reaction. Total IgE test is a blood test used to measure the complete IgE levels in the blood, but it does not indicate what is the specific allergen causing the reaction. Allergy- Mold 2 panel is a comprehensive screening that tests the body's reaction to 5 different types of molds (fungi) using  ImmunoCAP technique by measuring allergen specific IgE against them. Based on the results the source of allergy/allergies is determined and the course of treatment is decided accordingly.

An allergy can be uncomfortable and embarrassing as it often causes symptoms like a runny nose, difficulty breathing, rashes, and hives. Allergic reactions are caused by the immune system's hypersensitivity to certain substances such as food, drugs, pollen, or even dust mites. These substances responsible for the reaction are called allergens.

Immunoglobin E (IgE) is an antibody produced in response to an allergic reaction. A total IgE test measures the level of antibodies present in the body. For testing against different types of moulds (fungi), Allergy-Mould 2 Panel screening using the ImmunoCAP method is prescribed. Here is all you need to know about the test.

What is an Allergy-Mould-2 Panel test?

To identify allergies brought on by common indoor and outdoor moulds, an Allergy-Mould-2 Panel test is performed. It measures allergen-specific IgE response against 5 separate mould allergens.

When is the Allergy-Mould-2 Panel test done?

People with the following symptoms should do the test:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Itching eyes or throat
  • Irritated skin
  • Difficulty breathing

What other tests may be ordered other than the Allergy-Mould-2 Panel test

Frequently Asked Questions

Total ige test is done in suspected allergies due to inhalation of mold (fungi) for determining the exact source causing it (allergen). It mainly occurs in damp or moist places. Symptoms are often restricted to the respiratory system. Common symptoms are: Itching, running nose, sneezing, hives, coughing, redness and watering of the eyes. It may even trigger an attack of asthma or lead to breathing difficulty.

Certain severe cases may also lead to anaphylactic shock. Based on these results further specific testing is recommended.

The test is performed to diagnose allergy towards mould, which is commonly found in moist and damp places, and may trigger an allergic response in sensitive individuals when inhaled through air.

Total ige test measures the IgE mediated response to 28 different inhalant and environmental allergens. Total IgE levels are also measured. Further tests to a specific allergen will help in further diagnosis.

Total ige test requires a blood sample post exposure to the allergens. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Positive result to an allergen indicates that the person is allergic to it. Increased IgE levels further confirms that. The further treatment course is decided based on the results. Based on the symptom, age, environmental allergens, and region wise allergens further testing may be required for specific diagnosis.

Negative result may require other tests for differential diagnosis.

No specific preparation is required for this test. However, it is important to inform your healthcare provider about your current medications. Additionally, you may keep a record of your symptoms as well as the potential exposures that may have caused them.

The Allergy-Mould 2 Panel screening is recommended for anyone with a history of allergies. It is prescribed to those who suffer from symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes or throat, irritated skin, and difficulty breathing. It is also recommended for patients having long-term exposure to mould (fungi), which is predominant in the area.

You should go for the test as soon as possible, upon experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above. This will enable you to get prompt treatment. In addition, the test may be repeated every 6-12 months to keep track of any changes in your body's IgE response.

The Allergy-Mould 2 Panel test can provide information about allergies caused by fungi. It cannot detect food allergies or other types of allergies.

Yes, the test is a simple blood test that poses minimal risk. It can be done quickly and efficiently. The only discomfort caused is minor pain or bruising at the site of injection, which resolves in some time.
