Total ige test is done in suspected allergies due to inhalation of mold (fungi) for determining the exact source causing it (allergen). It mainly occurs in damp or moist places. Symptoms are often restricted to the respiratory system. Common symptoms are: Itching, running nose, sneezing, hives, coughing, redness and watering of the eyes. It may even trigger an attack of asthma or lead to breathing difficulty.

Certain severe cases may also lead to anaphylactic shock. Based on these results further specific testing is recommended.

The test is performed to diagnose allergy towards mould, which is commonly found in moist and damp places, and may trigger an allergic response in sensitive individuals when inhaled through air.

Total ige test measures the IgE mediated response to 28 different inhalant and environmental allergens. Total IgE levels are also measured. Further tests to a specific allergen will help in further diagnosis.

Total ige test requires a blood sample post exposure to the allergens. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer. 

Positive result to an allergen indicates that the person is allergic to it. Increased IgE levels further confirms that. The further treatment course is decided based on the results. Based on the symptom, age, environmental allergens, and region wise allergens further testing may be required for specific diagnosis. 

Negative result may require other tests for differential diagnosis.

No specific preparation is required for this test. However, it is important to inform your healthcare provider about your current medications. Additionally, you may keep a record of your symptoms as well as the potential exposures that may have caused them. 

IgE antibodies are measured in kilounits/litre (kU/L). IgE antibody levels against different mould allergens are measured in this test using the ImmunoCAP method. Abnormally high levels of IgE indicate an allergic response against a specific allergen. Values of IgE against the tested allergens may be interpreted as follows:

The Allergy-Mould 2 Panel screening is recommended for anyone with a history of allergies. It is prescribed to those who suffer from symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes or throat, irritated skin, and difficulty breathing. It is also recommended for patients having long-term exposure to mould (fungi), which is predominant in the area.

You should go for the test as soon as possible, upon experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above. This will enable you to get prompt treatment. In addition, the test may be repeated every 6-12 months to keep track of any changes in your body's IgE response.

The Allergy-Mould 2 Panel test can provide information about allergies caused by fungi. It cannot detect food allergies or other types of allergies.
