Veg Allergy Test Overview

An allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system that causes undesirable reactions to certain substances like food, dust, pollen, drugs or even animal dander. These reactions normally do not occur in others. The substance causing the reaction is an allergen. Immunoglobin E is an antibody that the body produces in case of an allergic reaction. Total IgE test is a blood test used to measure the complete IgE levels in the blood, but it does not indicate what is the specific allergen causing the reaction. Allergy - Vegetable-1 panel is a  screening that tests the body's reaction to 8 commonly used vegetables for cooking using the ImmunoCAP technique. Based on the results the source of allergy/allergies is determined and the course of treatment is decided accordingly. Along with this the allergen specific IgE levels are also checked.

Vegetable allergies are not as common as allergies to other food groups, but if left untreated, a vegetable allergy can drastically decrease the quality of life. In the instance of a vegetable reaction, the body views one or more vegetables as a toxin rather than necessary for sustenance. To counteract the toxin, the immune system releases histamines and antibodies, resulting in symptoms like edema, skin irritation, throat swelling and gastrointestinal issues.

What is an allergy test?

Allergy is the immune system's reaction to a harmless foreign substance, such as food, pollen, hairy animals, dust or medicines. Allergy panel, vegetables panel 1 includes testing against certain vegetables to identify those that are allergens. These tests assess the number of antibodies (the amount of IgE) produced by your body against food materials or vegetables like tomato, yeast, garlic, onion and celery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Veg allergy test is done in suspected allergies due to certain vegetables used for cooking for determining the exact source causing it (allergen).  Since it is a food related allergy, it commonly causes gastro-intestinal symptoms like diarrhoea and vomiting, but at times mere exposure to it may even lead to other skin related or respiratory symptoms like: Itching, rashes, running nose, sneezing, coughing, hives, and even shortness of breath. Certain severe cases may also lead to anaphylactic shock. Based on these results further specific testing is recommended.

This test assesses allergic sensitivity to several vegetables. Many vegetables can induce allergic reactions, and people who are sensitive to one may also be allergic to others. Additionally, people who are sensitive to pollen may also be allergic to certain vegetables since they contain comparable proteins. Being allergic to one or more vegetables necessitates keeping an eye on what is being consumed when it comes to products containing vegetables, such as dressings, soups, sauces, beverages and seasonings. They may also need to be avoided if they contain the trigger vegetable(s).

This allergy panel comprises the following items:

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Cucumber
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach

Veg allergy test measures the IgE mediated response to 8 commonly used vegetables for cooking. Total IgE levels are also measured. Further tests to a specific allergen will help in further diagnosis.

The test is used to detect vegetable allergies, and its results could mean the following:

• Normal range: Negative findings state normal conditions

• High range: This indicates an allergy or sensitivity to a specific food or ingredient

• Low range: This indicates normal conditions

Veg allergy test requires a blood sample post exposure to the allergens. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Positive result to an allergen indicates that the person is allergic to it. Increased allergen-specific IgE levels further confirms that. Very often the test may be positive for more than one allergen as well. The further treatment course is decided based on the results. Based on the symptom, age, environmental allergens, and region wise allergens further testing may be required for specific diagnosis. Negative result may require other tests for differential diagnosis.

Positive allergy test results should be discussed with a doctor to determine the next steps.

This test does not necessitate fasting, and the blood test requires no prior preparation. Before the allergy test, the caregiver will ask questions to learn about the patient's lifestyle, family history, and other factors.
They may sometimes recommend not taking certain medications before an allergy-vegetable-1 panel test since they can impact the test results.

You could be asked to stop taking the following medications:

  • Benzodiazepines
  • Antihistamines
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • indigestion treatment drugs
  • The anti-IgE monoclonal antibody used to treat asthma

Type 1 allergies, mediated by IgE, are frequently 'immediate' and are, by far, the most prevalent source of worry, with a modest risk of anaphylaxis in some cases.

Allergy symptoms can include rash, hives, itching, coughing, wheezing, throat tightening, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and lightheadedness. Severe cases may result in anaphylaxis, which can be fatal.

Being allergic to one or more vegetables necessitates keeping an eye on what is being consumed when it comes to products containing vegetables, such as dressings, soups, sauces, beverages and seasonings. They may also need to be avoided if they contain the trigger vegetable(s).
