SGPT Test Overview
SGPT is serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase also called ALT (Alanine aminotransferase). It is a type of enzyme. The main source of the enzyme ALT is the liver and specifically increases in response to liver disease. SGPT ALT serum test is performed to measure the level of Alanine Transaminase in the blood. The levels of Alanine Transaminase are useful in understanding the present state of the liver. It can indicate whether the liver is healthy or suffering from some disease or infection.
