LAP Score

The LAP Score Test measures the activity of alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme present in white blood cells, particularly neutrophils.

• To differentiate Chronic Myeloid Leukaemias from Leukaemoid reaction • To make an accurate diagnosis of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemias • To distinguish between benign and malignant leukocytosis • To guide appropriate treatment plans for patients with suspected leukaemia

The LAP Score Test may be recommended if you have • high white blood cell count with an unclear cause, • suspected leukaemia or leukaemia-like symptoms, • previously diagnosed leukaemia to monitor response to treatment, or • a family history of leukaemia or genetic risk factors for haematological disorders.

Abnormal results may indicate other hematologic disorders or leukemoid reactions.

To conduct the test, a blood sample will be collected using a needle from a vein in your arm. The sample will be sent to the laboratory for analysis

• Provide your medical history and any relevant heamato-pathological reports. • Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as certain drugs may affect test results. Also, tell them if you have any specific requirements. • Follow any other instructions given by your healthcare provider.

In addition to the LAP Score Test, Complete Blood Count (CBC) and Bone Marrow Aspiration or Biopsy may be ordered. These tests provide a comprehensive evaluation of blood and bone marrow cells to help diagnose and monitor various haematological conditions.

Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) is a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and causes an overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. It is often characterised by a specific genetic abnormality called the Philadelphia chromosome. CML can be effectively managed with targeted therapies.
