HBV DNA Detection by PCR - Amniotic fluid

The test measures the amount of hepatitis B virus DNA (HBV DNA) in amniotic fluid, the fluid that surrounds the fetus in the womb.

• To assess fetal health and plan for early intervention if necessary
• To monitor the viral load in pregnant women who are known carriers of HBV.
• To test for HBV infection in pregnant women who have never been tested.
• To help determine the risk of mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy or labour

Doctors may recommend this test if you

• are pregnant and have a history of HBV infection or are a known carrier,
• have tested positive for HBV during pregnancy,
• have a partner with HBV, or
• have symptoms of Hepatitis B, such as jaundice, dark urine, or abdominal pain.

An abnormal result indicates that HBV DNA is present in the amniotic fluid, which could suggest the possibility of the foetus being infected with HBV. If the test is positive, the pregnant woman may be offered treatment with antiviral medications to reduce the risk of vertical transmission. The baby will also be tested for HBV infection after birth.

A sample of amniotic fluid is collected using a sterile needle inserted into your womb through your abdomen by your gynecologist. The sample is stored and transported properly to avoid contamination or degradation.

• You may be asked to avoid taking certain medications that can interfere with your test results.
• You may need to sign a consent form before the procedure.
• You will be asked to empty your bladder before the test.

• Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) testing: Detects the presence of HBV surface antigen in blood, indicating infection with Hepatitis B
• Liver function tests: Determine how well your liver is working and whether it has been damaged by Hepatitis B infection

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver and can lead to serious liver damage, liver cancer or cirrhosis. It's transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids. Most people recover from acute HBV infection, but some develop a chronic infection that requires long-term monitoring and treatment.
