A CSF test is a medical test that measures the levels of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the body. The test is used to diagnose various conditions of the brain and spinal cord. A CSF test is typically done by taking a sample of CSF from the lower back. This is done with a needle and syringe and is usually painless. The sample is then sent to a lab for analysis.
Autoimmune encephalitis is a debilitating inflammatory disorder of the brain causing various neurological signs and symptoms. They often present with seizures and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Apart from the clinical history and presentation, various laboratory tests also supplement and help in diagnosing the condition. NMDA receptor plays a crucial role in regulating a wide variety of neurological functions, including breathing, locomotion, learning, memory formation, and neuroplasticity. Antibodies against glutamate receptor (type NMDA - NR1) are specific markers for inflammatory encephalopathic autoimmune disease.

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antibodies are associated with the different sub units of the NMDA receptor. Antibodies to the delta or NR2 subunits of NMDA receptor are associated with limbic encephalitis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), ataxia and epilepsia partialis continua. Antibodies against the NR1, NR2A and NR2B subunits of the NMDA are found in patients presenting with psychiatric symptoms, amnesia, seizures, dyskinesias, autonomic dysfunction and loss of consciousness. Also associated with ovarian and testicular teratoma. NMDAR antibody-testing is more sensitive in CSF than serum. Antibody-titers in CSF and serum are higher in patients with poor-outcome or teratoma. The titer-change in CSF correlates better with relapses than that of serum.
