Sucrose Lysis Test (PNH Screening tests)

This test evaluates red blood cells' susceptibility to lysis, which is the breakdown of cells under acidic conditions. Sucrose creates a low ionic strength gradient which triggers the complement system which in turn binds to RBCs leading to their breakdown. In individuals with Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria (PNH), red blood cells are typically more vulnerable to lysis.

This test is done primarily:

• To screen and diagnose Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria (PNH)
• To monitor response to PNH treatment
• To assess PNH-related anaemia and risk of blood clots.
