This test analyses the composition of cerebrospinal fluid, checking for infection markers, blood cells, proteins, glucose levels, and more. These measurements provide valuable insights into neurological disorders, infections, and inflammatory conditions affecting the brain and spinal cord.

This test is done for:

• Detecting infections such as meningitis.
• Identifying autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis.
• Evaluating bleeding or tumours in the brain.
• Monitoring treatment response for certain conditions.
• Diagnosing neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's.

This test is recommended for the following scenarios:

• Suspected meningitis or encephalitis
• Symptoms like severe headaches or confusion
• Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barré syndrome
• Follow-up on brain tumour treatment
• When monitoring Alzheimer's progression

Normal CSF findings include clear fluid with specific cell counts and protein levels. Abnormal results could indicate infections, tumours, bleeding, or inflammation in the brain or spinal cord. Your doctor will interpret these findings with your medical history for accurate diagnosis.

During this lumbar puncture:

• You'll lie on your side or sit with a curved back.
• Your lower back area will be cleaned and numbed.
• The doctor inserts a thin needle to collect CSF for testing promptly after.

There will be minimal discomfort during the procedure.
