Retinitis Profile by Real-Time PCR - Aqueous/Vitreous Fluid

This test detects the presence of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the aqueous/vitreous fluid of the eye.

• To diagnose retinitis caused by HSV-1, HSV-2, CMV, or VZV • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for retinitis • To identify other conditions that affect the retina and require different treatment approaches • To assess the risk of developing retinitis in high-risk individuals

This test may be recommended if you have • symptoms of retinitis such as blurred vision, floaters, and eye pain, • a diagnosis of retinitis or a known history of HSV, CMV, or VZV infection, or • conditions that weaken the immune system, such as HIV/AIDS, and increase the risk for retinitis.

Abnormal results may suggest an active infection with HSV-1, HSV-2, CMV, or VZV.

During this test, a small amount of aqueous/vitreous fluid will be obtained from your eye using a sterile procedure. The sample will be sent to the laboratory for analysis

• Discuss with your clinician about the need for this test and provide relevant clinical history. • No specific dietary restrictions or fasting are necessary. • Adhere to pre-test instructions provided by your doctor and inform them if you have any specific requirements.

• Ophthalmologic examination: To assess the health of your eyes and look for signs of retinitis • CD4 cell count: To evaluate immune status in individuals at risk for retinitis, such as those with HIV/AIDS • Other ocular fluid analyses: To investigate other causes of eye inflammation and determine the appropriate treatment
