PNS is a rare disorder characterized by the dysfunction of the nervous system due to an immune response triggered by underlying cancer. The presence of anti-Ma2 antibodies is specifically associated with a subtype of PNS known as paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE), which primarily affects the limbic system in the brain. The limbic system is involved in emotions, memory, and behaviour regulation. PLE can manifest as cognitive and memory impairments, personality changes, seizures, and other neurological symptoms.

A positive result in the test indicates the presence of anti-Ma2 antibodies and suggests a diagnosis of paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS). A negative result does not rule out PNS completely, as some patients with PNS may not have detectable levels of anti-Ma2 antibodies. In such cases, additional testing may be needed.
This test involves drawing a small sample of blood from a vein in your arm using a needle and a syringe. You may feel a slight pinch as the needle is inserted, but the procedure is generally quick and painless.
