Platelet Antibodies, Qualitative

This test measures the presence of anti-platelet antibodies in your blood.

This test is done:

• To detect and diagnose primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)
• To evaluate the effectiveness of ITP treatment
• To monitor other conditions that affect platelets

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have:

• Symptoms of ITP such as easy bruising, prolonged bleeding, or petechiae (tiny red spots on the skin)
• A previous diagnosis of ITP
• A family history of ITP
• Symptoms suggestive of other conditions affecting platelets

The normal range for platelet antibodies is typically negative. Abnormal results, indicating the presence of platelet antibodies, may suggest primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) or other conditions affecting platelets. It's important to discuss your test results with your doctor, who will interpret them in the context of your medical history and other diagnostic tests.

During this test:

• A small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm using a needle.
• The blood sample will be sent to the laboratory for testing.

• There is no special preparation required.
• Follow your doctor's instructions regarding any dietary restrictions or medication adjustments before the test

• Complete Blood Count (CBC): Measures the number of different blood cells, including platelets
• Coagulation Tests: Assess blood clotting ability and identify any abnormalities
• Bone Marrow Aspiration or Biopsy: May be done to evaluate the bone marrow's ability to produce platelets and determine the cause of low platelet count

Anti-platelet Antibody test or the Platelet Immunofluorescence test

Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly destroys platelets. This leads to a low platelet count, causing bleeding and bruising. ITP can be acute or chronic, and its exact cause is unknown.
