Osmolality

Osmolality (Serum) measures the concentration of particles in your blood serum to evaluate your body's fluid status, kidney function, and electrolyte balance. It provides valuable information about hydration levels and the ability of your organs to properly regulate bodily functions.

• To diagnose and monitor hyponatremia (low sodium levels) and osmolar gap
• To evaluate kidney function and assess electrolyte imbalances
• To understand fluid status in patients with certain medical conditions

This test may be recommended if you:

• Have symptoms such as confusion, seizures, or weakness that could be related to hyponatremia or electrolyte imbalances

• Are undergoing treatment that affects fluid or electrolyte balance
• Show signs of dehydration or over-hydration

The normal range for osmolality in serum is typically between 275 to 295 milliosmoles per kilogram (mOsm/kg). Abnormal results may indicate conditions such as dehydration, overhydration, kidney dysfunction, or electrolyte imbalances. However, further evaluation and discussion with your doctor are necessary to interpret the results accurately and determine appropriate next steps.
