Nor-metanephrine-Free Plasma

The Nor-metanephrine-Free Plasma test measures the levels of free nor-metanephrine (unconjugated form) in your blood. 

This test is done to

• Diagnose and monitor pheochromocytoma, a rare tumor that affects the adrenal glands and can cause high blood pressure and other symptoms.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for pheochromocytoma.
• Assess the risk of developing pheochromocytoma in individuals with a family history or genetic risk factors.
• Monitor other conditions that affect norepinephrine metabolism.

The Nor-metanephrine-Free Plasma test may be recommended if you:

• Have symptoms suggestive of pheochromocytoma, such as high blood pressure, sweating, rapid heartbeat, and panic attacks.
• Have a previous diagnosis of pheochromocytoma.
• Have a family history or genetic risk factors for pheochromocytoma.
• Have symptoms suggesting other conditions that affect norepinephrine metabolism.

Elevated levels of nor-metanephrine may indicate the presence of pheochromocytoma or other conditions that affect norepinephrine metabolism. 

During the test, a sample of your blood will be taken. The procedure is quick and involves inserting a needle into a vein in your arm. You may feel a slight pinch or prick during the needle insertion. The sample will then be sent to the laboratory for analysis.

To prepare for the test:

• Avoid consuming bananas, pineapple, chocolates, coffee, ice cream, cereals high in vanilla, potatoes, and B complex supplements 48 hours before collection.
• Follow any other specific instructions provided by your doctor.
• Provide your CT scan, USG report, and medication history if requested.

Pheochromocytomas are typically benign tumors that arise from the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla or extra-adrenal paraganglia. These tumors can produce and release large quantities of adrenaline and noradrenaline, leading to symptoms such as episodic or sustained high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, sweating, headache, and anxiety attacks.
