Nor-Adrenaline (Nor-Epinephrine) Urine

The test measures the levels of nor-adrenaline in urine.

• To diagnose hypertension
• To monitor response to treatment for hypertension
• To diagnose and monitor catecholamine-secreting tumours

To assess the risk of developing such tumours

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have

• high blood pressure not responsive to usual treatments,
• symptoms like palpitations, sweating, headache, tremors, and anxiety,
• signs and symptoms suggestive of catecholamine-secreting tumours, or
• family history or genetic predisposition for such tumours.

Elevated levels may indicate the presence of a catecholamine-secreting tumour, while low levels may suggest other medical conditions.

• You will be given a special container to collect your urine.
• The sample will be refrigerated and sent to the lab with relevant clinical history and mentioning urine volume.

• Avoid certain supplements and medications that can interfere with your test results.
• Avoid some foods and drinks including bananas, tea, coffee, and cold drink for accurate results.
• Follow fasting instructions provided by your doctor, if required.
• Inform your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter medication you are taking and any other specific requirements.
• Drink plenty of fluids and follow any other instructions provided by your doctor.

VMA (Vanillylmandelic acid): A urine test used together with nor-adrenaline to diagnose catecholamine-secreting tumours.
