Overview

White blood cells, also known as leucocytes, are an essential part of the immune system and help protect the body against infections and diseases. A defect in white blood cells can have serious implications for a person's immune system. The Leukemia panel by FISH - ALL test is a diagnostic tool used to detect specific genetic abnormalities in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) through fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis. The FISH probes utilized in this panel target key genetic rearrangements, including BCR-ABL1, ETV6-RUNX1, TCF3, and KMT2A(MLL) gene rearrangements. The clinical utility of this test lies in its ability to identify these specific genetic alterations, which are essential for accurate diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment planning in ALL patients. By analyzing these genetic markers, healthcare professionals can determine the presence and significance of these rearrangements, aiding in providing personalized and targeted therapies to improve patient outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Leukaemia Panel - ALL test analyzes gene rearrangements in specific genes, including BCR-ABL1, ETV6-RUNX1, TCF3, and KMT2A (MLL).
• To confirm a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). • To assess the prognosis and risk stratification of ALL • To guide treatment decisions, including the choice of chemotherapy regimen • To monitor treatment response and detect minimal residual disease (MRD) • To identify specific gene rearrangements that may have targeted therapies available
The Leukaemia Panel - ALL test is recommended for individuals who • have symptoms suggestive of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), such as fatigue, easy bleeding or bruising, recurrent infections, bone pain, or enlarged lymph nodes, • have abnormal blood counts or blood smear findings that raise suspicion of ALL, • have a family history of leukaemia or other genetic predispositions to ALL, or • are undergoing treatment for ALL to assess response to therapy or detect minimal residual disease (MRD).
Abnormal results from the Leukaemia Panel - ALL test may indicate the presence of specific gene rearrangements associated with ALL.
During the test, a bone marrow sample is collected using a Na-heparin vacutainer. The sample is sent to the laboratory for testing.
Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as certain medications may interfere with the test results. Also, tell them if you have any specific requirements.
• Complete blood count (CBC) to evaluate blood cell counts and morphology • Flow cytometry to identify specific cell markers associated with different types of leukaemia • Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration to further evaluate the bone marrow for leukaemia cells and other abnormalities
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia Panel or ALL FISH panel
Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is a type of blood cancer characterised by the rapid overproduction of immature white blood cells in the bone marrow. It is the most common type of leukaemia in children but can also occur in adults. ALL is treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplantation, and targeted therapy based on specific genetic abnormalities detected through tests like the Leukaemia Panel - ALL.
