JEV RNA Detection by Real-time PCR - EDTA Blood

This test detects the presence of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) RNA in your blood.

• To diagnose Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection • To assess the severity of the infection • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment • To identify outbreaks of JEV infections in a region

The JEV RNA Detection test is recommended if you have • symptoms of headache, fever, neck stiffness, seizures, or confusion, • a history of travelling to regions where JEV is endemic, • a diagnosis of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), or • an immunocompromised status.

A positive result for the JEV RNA Detection test suggests that you have been infected by the virus. A negative result does not necessarily rule out JEV infection.

A technician will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. They will send the blood sample to the laboratory for testing.

• You do not need to fast or make any dietary changes. • Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications or supplements. Also, let them know if you have any specific requirements. • Tell the technician if you have any bleeding disorders or are on blood-thinning medication.

• Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Tests: RT-PCR tests may be done on cerebrospinal fluid or tissue samples to diagnose encephalitis. • Complete Blood Count (CBC): A CBC measures the number of blood cells in your bloodstream and can indicate if you have an infection.
