JC DNA Detection by Real-time PCR - EDTA Plasma

This test detects the presence of JC polyomavirus in your blood using a process called real-time PCR.

• To detect the presence of JC polyomavirus and assess your risk for developing PML • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for PML or other conditions related to the virus

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have • a weakened immune system due to HIV/AIDS, organ transplants or certain medications, • symptoms suggestive of PML such as weakness, speech problems, vision changes or confusion, • been diagnosed with another condition associated with the JC virus, or • been exposed to someone with PML.

Elevated levels of JC virus DNA may indicate the presence of PML or other conditions related to the virus.

This test requires a blood sample to be collected from your arm. The sample is then processed using real-time PCR technology

Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications, as some drugs can affect test results. Also, inform them if you have any specific requirements.

Lumbar puncture: A spinal tap may be done to collect a sample of cerebrospinal fluid to help diagnose or monitor PML.
