Isoleucine Quantitative Urine 24H Test

This test measures how much isoleucine you have in your urine over a 24-hour period.

• To help diagnose or monitor suspected cases of Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), a rare genetic metabolic disorder that prevents the body from metabolising certain amino acids, including isoleucine
• To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment of MSUD, or detect other similar disorders

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have any of the following:

• Symptoms of MSUD such as poor feeding, vomiting, seizures, developmental delays, and coma
• Positive newborn screening for MSUD
• Family history of the condition
• Abnormal results from similar tests such as plasma amino acid tests

Elevated levels can indicate Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) or other metabolic disorders.

The test requires collecting all your urine over a 24-hour period into a special container provided by the lab. 

To prepare for this test, remember the following points:

• Your doctor may give you specific instructions regarding fasting or omitting certain foods before the test.
• Your doctor may advise you to avoid certain medications that could interfere with accurate test results.
• You need to collect all of your urine in a special container provided by the lab over a 24-hour period.

• Plasma amino acid test: This is another way to measure the levels of different amino acids in your blood plasma
• Genetic testing: It can help identify gene mutations that cause maple syrup urine disease.
