Desmin IHC

This test is recommended for individuals who have:

• A suspected or confirmed diagnosis of sarcomas derived from smooth or striated muscle
• A need for accurate tumour classification
• Been advised by a doctor based on relevant symptoms, medical history, or other diagnostic findings

Abnormal results may indicate the presence of sarcomas derived from smooth or striated muscle. However, abnormal results do not necessarily mean that you have cancer or any other serious condition. It is essential to discuss your test results with your doctor, who will interpret them in the context of your medical history and other diagnostic tests.

During this test:

• Your doctor will collect a tissue sample from your tumour.
• The tissue sample will be processed and stained to evaluate the expression of Desmin.
• The pathologist will analyse the stained tissue to determine the presence and extent of Desmin expression.

Before the test:

• Ensure you provide the original histopathology report and all relevant clinical and radiological details.
• Follow any specific instructions given by your doctor regarding fasting or medication restrictions.

• Additional immunohistochemistry markers to further characterize the tumour
• Genetic tests to identify specific gene mutations associated with certain types of sarcomas
• Radiological imaging such as CT scans or MRIs to assess tumour size and extent

They can also occur in the head, neck, and internal organs. There are many different types of sarcoma:

• Soft tissue sarcoma: Soft tissue sarcoma is the most common type of sarcoma. It accounts for about 70% of all sarcoma cases. Soft tissue sarcoma can develop in any of the soft tissues of the body, including the muscles, fat, nerves, and blood vessels.
• Bone sarcoma: Bone sarcoma is a type of sarcoma that starts in the bones. It accounts for about 15% of all sarcoma cases. Bone sarcoma can occur in any bone in the body, but it is most common in the arms, legs, and pelvis.
• Other types of sarcoma: There are many other rare types of sarcoma, including leiomyosarcoma, liposarcoma, and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).
