CA-19.9 IHC

The CA-19.9 IHC test is a laboratory procedure that uses an antibody called CA-19.9 to detect the presence of CA-19.9 protein in tissue samples.

This test is primarily done to detect and monitor pancreatic cancer. It also helps doctors in the following ways:

• Assessing the effectiveness of pancreatic cancer treatment
• Diagnosing other conditions affecting the pancreas
• Evaluating the risk of developing pancreatic cancer
• The test can also be used to detect the recurrence of pancreatic cancer.

• Have symptoms that could indicate pancreatic cancer, such as abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or jaundice
• Have a family history of pancreatic cancer
• Are receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer

A positive CA-19.9 IHC test result means that CA-19.9 protein was detected in the tissue sample. This may be a sign of pancreatic cancer. However, it is important to note that a positive CA-19.9 IHC test result does not always mean that pancreatic cancer is present. Other conditions, such as pancreatitis, liver disease, and cholangiocarcinoma, can also cause CA-19.9 levels to be elevated. 

• A small sample of your tissue, obtained from a biopsy or surgery, is examined.
• The laboratory uses a process called immunohistochemistry (IHC) to measure the levels of CA-19.9 in the tissue sample.
• The results will be reported to your doctor for further interpretation and discussion.

There are no specific preparations required for this test. However, your doctor may ask you to provide your original histopathology report and any relevant clinical and radiological details for an accurate interpretation of the results. You should also speak to your healthcare provider about any dietary or medical requirements.

• Imaging tests like CT scans or MRI to locate and evaluate tumours in the pancreas
• Blood tests to measure tumour markers such as CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) or CA 125
• Biopsy or cytology tests to confirm the presence of cancer cells

• IHC Single Marker with Reporting CA-19.9
• Immunohistochemistry for CA-19.9

Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the pancreas. It is an aggressive cancer that often has few symptoms in its early stages, making early detection challenging but crucial for effective treatment.
