IA2 Insulin Auto Antibodies Serum Test

Overview

Antibodies against Islet Cell Antigen 2 (IA-2 or ICA-512) are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that target a protein called IA-2, which is found on the surface of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. IA-2 is an important antigen involved in the regulation of insulin secretion. In Type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas, leading to a deficiency of insulin in the body. During this process, the immune system produces autoantibodies that target the beta cells, including IA-2 autoantibodies. They are found in 50% to 75% of type 1 diabetics at and prior to disease onset.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The detection of IA-2 autoantibodies in the blood is a marker of autoimmune destruction of beta cells in the pancreas, which is a hallmark of Type 1 diabetes.
  • The IA-2 autoantibody test can also be used to assess the risk of developing the disease in individuals who have a family history or other risk factors.

IA2 Insulin Autoantibodies Serum test measures Islet Cell Antigen 2 (IA-2) in blood.

If the results of the Islet Cell Antigen 2 (IA-2) serum test are abnormal, it may indicate that the individual has an increased risk of developing Type 1 diabetes or may already have the disease

The test involves drawing a small amount of blood from a vein in your arm. A healthcare professional will clean the area with an antiseptic, wrap an elastic band around your upper arm to make the veins more visible, and insert a needle into a vein to collect the blood sample. You may feel a brief prick or stinging sensation when the needle is inserted, but the procedure is generally painless.

No special preparation is required for the test. However, it is recommended that you consult with your healthcare provider before taking the test, as they may have specific instructions or recommendations based on your individual medical history and current health status

If an individual is experiencing any of these symptoms of Type 1 diabetes, they should speak with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate course of action.

  • Frequent urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Hunger
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores or infections
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

The IA-2 autoantibody test is often used in conjunction with other autoantibody tests, such as the Insulin Antibody Type I & II Diabetes Serum test and the Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase (GAD) Autoantibodies test, to provide a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's risk of developing Type 1 diabetes.

Currently, there is no cure for Type 1 diabetes, and treatment typically involves insulin therapy and other medications to control blood sugar levels and prevent complications associated with the disease. Early diagnosis and intervention can help improve outcomes and prevent complications associated with the disease.
