HIV-1 Proviral DNA Detection Test

This test measures the presence of HIV-1 proviral DNA in a blood sample.

• To confirm an HIV infection in newborns under two years of age
• To monitor the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in patients with established HIV infection
• To detect recent HIV infection after exposure to the virus

This test may be recommended if you have

• a newborn baby born to an HIV-positive mother,
• recent exposure to the virus, or
• positive results on other screening tests for HIV.

A positive result means that you have been infected with the virus and require immediate medical intervention.

A healthcare professional will draw blood by inserting a needle into your arm. They will collect the sample in an EDTA vacutainer tube and send it for analysis.

There are no particular preparation requirements for this test.

• HIV Serology Testing: This test detects antibodies to the virus and is usually the first test used to diagnose HIV infection.
• Viral Load Testing: This test measures the amount of virus in your blood and determines how well ART is working.
• CD4 Cell Count: This test measures the number of CD4 (+) T-cells in your blood - these cells are responsible for fighting infections.

HIV DNA PCR Test, or HIV PCR Test

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks your immune system cells and weakens your ability to fight infections. It spreads through unprotected sex, sharing needles, from mother to newborn during childbirth or breastfeeding, and via blood transfusions. HIV is a lifelong condition that can be managed with antiretroviral therapy (ART), which reduces viral load and prevents transmission. Without treatment, HIV can progress to AIDS, which is fatal.
