HTLV 1 And 2 Virus Total Antibody by CLIA - Serum

This test detects the antibodies to the Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus I and II (HTLV). These antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to an HTLV infection.

• To diagnose an HTLV infection • To monitor the course of an HTLV infection • To assess the risk of HTLV transmission from an infected mother to her baby • To screen people who are at high risk of HTLV infection, including people who have received blood transfusions or organ transplants, and intravenous drug users.

This test is usually recommended when you have • signs and symptoms suggestive of HTLV infection such as inflammation in the spinal cord, nerve damage, or abnormal blood cell counts, • been in close contact with someone who has an HTLV infection, • received a blood transfusion or organ transplant before routine screening for HTLV began, or • shared needles or other injection equipment with someone who has an HTLV infection.

Abnormal results indicate that you have been exposed to an HTLV infection, but further tests may be needed to confirm or monitor the condition.

No special preparations are usually required for this test. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking anything except water for several hours before the test. Inform your doctor if you have any specific requirements.

• HTLV DNA PCR: This test detects the genetic material of the virus in the blood, and is used in combination with antibody tests to confirm an HTLV infection. • CBC (Complete Blood Count) Test: This test measures different components of blood, including white blood cells, which can become abnormal in people with HTLV infections.
