HIV-1 RNA Combo 2 by PCR & Sanger Sequencing - EDTA Plasma

This test detects HIV-1 RNA in the bloodstream along with drug resistance using a combination of two methods, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Sanger sequencing.

• Doctors recommend this test for individuals with high-risk behaviours like unprotected sex, sharing needles, or sexually transmitted infections.
• It is recommended for newborns born to HIV-positive mothers.
• It is also recommended for patients who have been exposed to blood or body fluids containing HIV.

An elevated viral load indicates active replication of the virus in the body. Drug-resistant strains of the virus can also be identified.

During the test, a small blood sample will be collected from your arm and sent to a laboratory for testing.

Fast for 8–10 hours before the test, but you may drink water.

Other tests that may be ordered alongside this test include CD4 cell count, which measures the white blood cells that fight infections, and Western blot or ELISA tests, which are used to confirm the presence of HIV antibodies.
