HIV-1 RNA Drug Resistance for integrase inhibitor by PCR & Sanger Sequencing - EDTA Plasma

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have HIV and are taking or will take an integrase inhibitor. Your doctor may also order this test if you have detectable viral loads or are experiencing treatment failure.

If your results show mutations in your strain of HIV, your doctor will consider other medications that may be more effective against your particular viral strain.

The test is a simple blood draw where a lab technician will collect 3ml of EDTA plasma in a sterile plain vacutainer. The technicians will then send the sample to a laboratory for testing.

Your doctor may ask you to fast for 8 hours before the test. Be sure you have disclosed all medications and supplements you are taking to your doctor. Inform your doctor if you have any specific requirements.

Your doctor may recommend other tests to monitor your HIV like CD4 and viral load testing. CD4 counts measure the number of white blood cells that fight against infections in your body, while viral load testing determines the amount of virus in your body.
