The HBV DNA Detection by PCR - CSF test is used to diagnose hepatitis B infection in the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS is made up of the brain and spinal cord. HBV infection of the CNS is a rare but serious condition that can cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and Guillain-Barré syndrome (a neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness and paralysis).
The HBV DNA Detection by PCR - CSF test is also used to monitor patients with chronic hepatitis B infection who have developed CNS complications.

This test might be recommended if you have
- chronic HBV infection,
- symptoms or signs of viral meningitis or encephalitis, such as headache, fever, stiff neck, seizures, or confusion,

High levels of HBV DNA in CSF may indicate nerve damage or inflammation caused by viral replication.
Your healthcare provider will insert a needle into your spinal canal to withdraw the CSF. They will send the sample to a laboratory for testing.
