HBV DNA Detection by PCR - Ascitic Fluid

This test detects the presence of hepatitis B virus DNA (HBV DNA) in ascitic fluid.

• To diagnose or monitor chronic hepatitis B infection
• To evaluate the effectiveness of antiviral treatment
• To predict the risk of developing liver cancer

Your doctor might recommend this test if you have

• chronic hepatitis B infection,
• liver cirrhosis,
• symptoms suggestive of liver disease,
• history of exposure to HBV, or
• family history of hepatitis B infection.

An abnormal result indicates the presence of the virus in ascitic fluid, which suggests an active HBV infection or reactivation if you have a history of chronic infection.

HBV DNA Detection by PCR - Ascitic Fluid test is a relatively invasive test. It requires a paracentesis, which is a procedure in which a needle is inserted through the abdomen to collect a sample of ascitic fluid. To conduct this test, 3 mL of ascitic fluid is collected in a sterile leak-proof container. The sample is then transported to the laboratory for testing.

Chronic hepatitis B infection is a long-term (chronic) infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). It can cause serious liver damage, including cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), liver failure, and liver cancer. Chronic hepatitis B infection is most common in people who were infected with the virus at a young age. About 90% of infants who are infected with HBV will develop chronic infection. The risk of chronic infection decreases with age, but it is still possible to develop chronic infection if you are infected with HBV as an adult.
