Haptoglobin Test - Serum
Serum Haptoglobin Test Overview
Haptoglobin is a protein made by the liver that binds to haemoglobin. It's binding with haemoglobin helps remove haemoglobin from blood.
Serum haptoglobin test is often used to confirm hemolytic anaemia or hemolytic crisis where the levels of haptoglobin decrease or may be absent depending upon the severity of hemolysis.
The Haptoglobin Serum test measures the amount of haptoglobin in the blood. The liver produces a protein called haptoglobin which binds to a certain kind of haemoglobin.
Red blood cells contain the protein haemoglobin, which is responsible for transporting oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our body. Small amounts of haemoglobin circulate in the bloodstream, but the majority is found inside red blood cells. Inside the bloodstream, haemoglobin and haptoglobin make a complex bond. Our liver swiftly removes this compound from our body and the bloodstream.
Haemoglobin is released into the bloodstream in greater amounts when red blood cells are destroyed. As a result, the body will eliminate more of the haptoglobin-haemoglobin complex. The body may lose haptoglobin more quickly than the liver can produce it. Oour blood levels of haptoglobin decrease as a result. A red blood cell condition like anaemia may be present if our haptoglobin levels are too low.
What is Haptoglobin?
By reducing the hemoglobin level, the haptoglobin serum helps reduce the effects of chronic stress, fatigue, and other lifestyle-related issues.
The level of haptoglobin serum in the blood is important for several reasons:
- Firstly, it helps to prevent the body from becoming overwhelmed by free-floating haemoglobin. This can prevent serious conditions such as hemolytic anaemia, cancer, and kidney disease.
- Secondly, it helps reduce inflammation, which can lead to various illnesses, including arthritis and diabetes.
- Finally, haptoglobin serum also helps to protect the liver and kidneys, as well as safeguard the body against infection.

Who should do the Haptoglobin Serum test?
The following individuals should take a haptoglobin serum test:
• Those with a family history of anaemia or any other disease associated with haptoglobin levels: It’s important to check haptoglobin levels to rule out any underlying conditions that could be the cause of anaemia or other conditions.
• Those who become easily fatigued: Low haptoglobin levels can cause extreme fatigue and exhaustion.
• Elderly individuals: Age-related changes in haptoglobin levels can lead to medical conditions, such as anaemia.
• Pregnant women: Anemia is especially common during pregnancy, so it’s essential to monitor haptoglobin levels.
• Those with chronic diseases: People with chronic diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease should monitor haptoglobin levels in the blood.

Frequently Asked Questions
Serum haptoglobin test is done to confirm the presence of hemolytic anaemia. In presence of hemolytic anaemia, the concentration of haptoglobin decreases or may be absent depending upon the severity of hemolysis.
The test can also be used to assess cessation of hemolysis; haptoglobin levels become normal post 1 week of abatement of hemolytic episode
A test for haptoglobin serum searches for the presence of haptoglobin in the patient's serum. The following are some of the essential reasons to have a test for haptoglobin serum:
• It may be used to diagnose and confirm a wide range of illnesses, including hemolytic anaemia and other blood abnormalities.
• It may help detect early indications of hemolytic anaemia, which enables early intervention and therapy to be administered.
• It may be a screening tool for many autoimmune illnesses, including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
• It may assist in determining the likelihood of one having certain cancers.
• It may be useful for monitoring the efficacy of certain drugs and therapies, such as chemotherapy.
Serum haptoglobin test measures haptoglobin in the blood of the patient
The Haptoglobin Serum test measures haptoglobin, a protein produced by the liver in response to free haemoglobin, in the blood.
Serum haptoglobin test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in a vacutainer
A decrease in haptoglobin level supports the presence of hemolytic anaemia due to different causes such as certain drugs & medications, infections, G6PD deficiency, abnormal haemoglobins like sickle cell anaemia & thalassemia, artificial heart valves etc.
No special preparation is required for the Haptoglobin Serum test. However, it is important to inform the healthcare practitioner of any medications we take.
The normal levels of Haptoglobin serum test are between 45 and 200 milligrammes of haptoglobin per deciliter of blood. Minor variances may also exist depending on the hospital or diagnostic centre.
A blood disorder called hemolytic anaemia happens when our red blood cells are lost more quickly than they can be replenished. Hemolytic anaemia can be mild or serious, and it can progress fast or slowly.
