Glucose Tolerance Test (5 Samples)

This test measures how well your body processes glucose. It assesses your blood sugar levels before and after consuming a specific amount of glucose at 5 intervals, helping to diagnose diabetes and evaluate insulin resistance.

This test is used to:

• Diagnose diabetes or gestational diabetes during pregnancy
• Evaluate insulin resistance
• Determine if your body is regulating blood sugar levels effectively
• Identify impaired glucose tolerance and prediabetes

Doctors may recommend this test if you:

• Have symptoms of diabetes such as increased thirst or frequent urination
• Are at high risk for gestational diabetes during pregnancy
• Have a family history of diabetes
• Are overweight or have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
• Have been diagnosed with prediabetes or impaired glucose tolerance

The normal range for blood sugar levels during a glucose tolerance test varies, but elevated levels may indicate diabetes, prediabetes, or impaired glucose tolerance. Abnormal results don't necessarily mean you have diabetes; additional testing and consultation with your doctor are needed for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

• You will be asked to fast overnight before the test.
• A blood sample will be taken to measure your fasting blood sugar level.
• You will then drink a glucose solution.
• Blood samples will be taken at specific intervals over a few hours to measure how your body processes glucose.
• You may experience mild discomfort from the blood draws or feel nauseated after consuming the glucose solution.

• Fast for at least 8 hours (overnight) before the test.
• Avoid smoking, vigorous exercise, and caffeine before the test.
• Follow any additional instructions provided by your doctor, such as temporarily stopping certain medications or supplements.
