Fungal Stain By KOH & Calcofluor White Stain - Hair

This test detects the presence of fungal organisms in hair samples using the stains KOH & Calcofluor White.

• To diagnose fungal infections of the hair and scalp • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for fungal infections • To identify other conditions related to fungal infections

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have • symptoms such as itching, redness, or scaling on your scalp or other areas of your body, • a suspected fungal infection on your hair or scalp, • a previous diagnosis of a fungal infection and need monitoring, or • a compromised immune system, which increases the risk of fungal infections.

Abnormal results may suggest the presence of a fungal infection.

During this test, a small sample of your hair will be collected in a sterile container. The sample will be sent to the laboratory for testing.

• Do not wash your hair for at least 24 hours before the test. • Inform your doctor about any antifungal medications you may be taking. Also, tell them if you have any specific requirements. • Follow any specific instructions provided by your doctor regarding hair care or preparing the sample.

• Culture and sensitivity test: To identify the specific species of fungus causing the infection and determine which antifungal medications are most effective • Skin biopsy: If needed, a small piece of skin from the affected area may be removed for further examination under a microscope
