Fungal Culture and Identification by MALDITOF (Vitek MS) – Sputum

This test detects the presence of fungi in a sputum sample obtained from the respiratory system and identifies the specific type of fungus using MALDITOF technology.

• To diagnose fungal infections in the respiratory system. • To determine the specific type of fungus causing the infection. • To guide clinicians in prescribing appropriate antifungal treatment. • To monitor the effectiveness of antifungal treatment. • To assess the risk of developing fungal infections for individuals with certain risk factors.

This test may be recommended if you • Have symptoms such as persistent cough, chest pain, or shortness of breath that could indicate a fungal infection. • Have a compromised immune system, such as due to HIV/AIDS or organ transplantation. • Have been exposed to environments where fungal infections are common, such as construction sites or agricultural settings.

Abnormal results indicate the presence of fungal infection in the respiratory system.

You will be asked to provide a sputum sample in a sterile container. The sample will then be sent to the laboratory for processing.
