Fungal Stain By KOH & Calcofluor White Stain - CSF

This test detects the presence of fungal organisms in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using KOH and Calcofluor White stains.

• To diagnose fungal infections in the central nervous system • To identify the type of fungus causing the infection • To guide appropriate treatment options • To monitor the effectiveness of antifungal therapy

This test may be recommended if you have • symptoms suggestive of a fungal infection in the central nervous system, such as severe headaches, fever, confusion, or neck stiffness, • a compromised immune system that increases the risk of developing opportunistic fungal infections • a history of systemic fungal infections, or • a suspected fungal meningitis or encephalitis.

Abnormal results suggest the presence of fungal organisms and can indicate a fungal infection in the central nervous system.

During this test, a small amount of CSF will be collected through a sterile procedure. The CSF sample will be sent to the laboratory for processing.

• Ensure that the specimen is properly collected and stored in a sterile leak-proof container. • Inform your doctor if you have any specific requirements.

• CSF Culture: This test helps in identifying the specific type of fungus causing the infection. • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR): PCR testing can detect fungal DNA in the CSF, aiding in the diagnosis of fungal infections.

Fungal Staining of Cerebrospinal Fluid

Fungal meningitis or encephalitis is a condition characterised by inflammation of the meninges (protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) or the brain itself, caused by fungal infections. It can lead to severe neurological symptoms and requires prompt diagnosis and treatment.
