Endophthalmitis Profile by PCR - Fluid
Also known as: Endophthalmitis Panel by PCR, Fluid
Overview
The fluid within the eye is called aqueous humor. It is a clear, watery fluid that fills the front part of the eye, between the cornea and the lens. Its main function is to provide nutrients and oxygen to the cornea and lens, which do not have their own blood supply. The Endophthalmitis Profile by PCR is a molecular diagnostic test used to detect the presence of various bacteria, fungi, and DNA viruses in the fluid from the eye (ocular fluid) of immunosuppressed patients suspected to have endophthalmitis. Endophthalmitis is a severe infection that affects the interior of the eye and can lead to vision loss if not promptly treated. The PCR-based testing method allows for identifying and detecting specific genetic material of the targeted microorganisms. The profile includes testing for a panel of 17 bacteria, 2 fungi, and 3 DNA viruses. By analyzing the genetic material, the test can determine if any of these microorganisms are present in the ocular fluid.

Frequently Asked Questions
This test measures the presence of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) from 17 types of bacteria, 2 types of fungi, and 3 DNA viruses in the fluid within your eye.
• To identify bacterial, fungal, or viral infections inside the eye • To determine the type of pathogen causing the infection and decide the appropriate treatment • To track the effectiveness of treatment
This test is recommended • if you are suspected to be suffering from endophthalmitis, • if you have symptoms such as severe eye pain, decreased vision, sensitivity to light or redness of the eye after an injury or surgery, or • if you are immunocompromised.
The presence of DNA from certain bacteria, fungi, or viruses indicates an infection inside the eye.
Your ophthalmologist will collect 3 ml of fluid from inside your eye in a sterile leak-proof container. The sample is then sent to the laboratory for PCR testing.
Inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking. Your doctor may give specific instructions if you have conditions that affect immune function or blood clotting.
Your ophthalmologist may also order other tests to diagnose endophthalmitis, such as bacterial culture or fungal culture of the eye fluid.
Eye Fluid PCR test or Ocular Microbiology test
