Cystine Quantitative Spot Urine Test

This test measures the amount of cystine in the urine. 

This test is mainly done to diagnose and monitor cystinuria, but it may also be used to

• Screen newborn babies for metabolic disorders.
• Detect and monitor other metabolic disorders or inborn errors of metabolism.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for cystinuria or other metabolic disorders.

Your doctor may recommend this test if you

• Have a family history or symptoms of cystinuria, such as recurring kidney stones or pain in your back, sides, or abdomen.
• Have been diagnosed with other metabolic disorders or inborn errors of metabolism.

This test may also be recommended for newborn babies undergoing screening for metabolic disorders.

Elevated levels of cystine may indicate cystinuria or other metabolic disorders. 

During this test, you will be asked to provide a 10 ml sample of spot urine. 

To prepare for this test, remember the following points:

• Consult your doctor if you are taking any medications or amino acid supplements that may interfere with your test results.
• Fasting is recommended but not mandatory.
• Drink plenty of fluids before the test.

Cystinuria urine test

Cystinuria is a rare genetic disorder that prevents the body from reabsorbing certain amino acids properly, causing a buildup of cystine in the urine and leading to the formation of kidney stones. Symptoms include recurring kidney stones, pain in your back, sides, or abdomen, and blood in your urine.
