These devices can also increase chances of infection. Bacteremia can occur in patients with central line catheter. Patient can have fever, chills, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing among other symptoms. Early diagnosis is crucial and life saving. It is caused by multiple pathogens but commonly due to pyogenic bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella or E. coli. This test cultures central venous line tip from the patient to identify the causative bacterium and also to establish as to which antibiotic can be used to treat the infection.
