Bacterial infection of blood or bacteraemia occurs most often secondary to a lung, urinary tract, skin or other infections. Patient can have fever, chills, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing among other symptoms. Early diagnosis is crucial and life saving. It is caused by multiple pathogens but commonly due to pyogenic bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella or E. coli. This test cultures blood sample from the patient to identify the causative bacterium and also to establish as to which antibiotic can be used to treat the infection. Collecting a paired sample (2 blood culture bottles) significantly increases chances of isolation of causative agent.

This test is done to find the causative agent of bacteremia. The test also establishes the antibiotics that can be used against the isolated causative agent.
This test establishes presence or absence bacteria in blood. In case bacterium is isolated then antibiotic susceptibility testing is also done.
This test requires apx 20 ml of blood; 10 ml of each of the two bottles. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in blood culture bottle.

No growth: This means that bacterium could not be isolated from the collected sample Growth: This means that bacterium was isolated from the sample. The sensitivity of the bacterium towards various antibiotics is also reported. The result have to be correlated clinically in case a skin commensal is isolated. Results may be false negative under the following conditions: 1. Patient is on antibiotics 2. Infection due to a fastidious or anaerobic bacterium (this test is for routine aerobic bacteria only) Results may be false positive if contamination occurs while collecting the sample
