CSF Index (CSF and serum)

The CSF Index measures the levels of IgG and Albumin in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum. 

CSF Index is mainly done to

• Help diagnose suspected multiple sclerosis.
• Gain information about the immune response in the central nervous system.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for multiple sclerosis.
• Monitor other conditions that involve abnormal protein levels in the CSF and serum.

CSF Index may be recommended if you have symptoms suggestive of multiple sclerosis, such as vision problems, muscle weakness, or coordination issues. It is also recommended if you have a family history or genetic risk factors for multiple sclerosis or other neurological conditions involving abnormal protein levels.

Elevated levels of these proteins can indicate inflammation or damage in the central nervous system, including multiple sclerosis. 

During the CSF Index test, a sample of CSF and serum will be collected through a lumbar puncture and blood draw.

Before the CSF Index, your doctor may recommend:

• Stopping certain medications that can interfere with the test results.
• Fasting for a few hours before the test.
• Providing a detailed medical history, including current medications and any recent infections or illnesses.

Other tests that may be ordered alongside CSF Index include:

• MRI of the brain and spinal cord: Imaging tests that help visualize any structural abnormalities or lesions in the central nervous system.
• Oligoclonal banding: A test that detects abnormal bands of immunoglobulins in the CSF, which is commonly seen in multiple sclerosis.
• Visual Evoked Potential (VEP): A test that measures the electrical activity in the optic nerves, which can help diagnose multiple sclerosis.

IgG Index, Albumin Index

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and damages the protective covering of nerve fibres, resulting in communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.
