Cryptococcus Antigen Detection By Agglutination - CSF

The Cryptococcus antigen test detects the presence of Cryptococcus neoformans or Cryptococcus gattii infection in your cerebrospinal fluid.

• To diagnose the presence of Cryptococcus neoformans or Cryptococcus gattii infection • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for cryptococcal infection • To assess the response to antifungal therapy • To evaluate the risk of disease progression in individuals with HIV/AIDS

Your doctor may recommend this test if you • have symptoms suggestive of cryptococcal infection, such as headache, fever, confusion, or stiff neck, • are immunocompromised, such as individuals with HIV/AIDS or those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, • have been exposed to a known source of Cryptococcus infection, or • have a history of cryptococcal infection and require monitoring.

An abnormal result, which is positive, suggests the presence of an active cryptococcal infection.

During the test, a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is collected using a sterile leak-proof container. The sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis.

• Fungal culture: This test helps identify the specific type of Cryptococcus fungus causing the infection. • India Ink Staining: It is another method used to visualise Cryptococcus organisms in body fluids or tissues. • Antibody testing: Serological tests can detect antibodies produced by your immune system in response to Cryptococcus infection.
