Cobalt Serum Test

This test measures the amount of cobalt in your blood serum.

• To diagnose cobalt toxicity
• To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for cobalt toxicity

Your doctor may recommend a Cobalt Test if you have one or more of the following:

• pain and inflammation around a metal-on-metal hip implant,
• a job that may expose you to cobalt dust or fumes,
• exposure to cobalt through dietary supplements or medication, or
• symptoms suggestive of cobalt toxicity, such as fatigue or skin rash.

Higher levels can indicate exposure to toxic levels of cobalt or medical conditions like heart disease, lung disease, or liver disease.

During the Cobalt Test, a healthcare professional will draw your blood from a vein in your arm. Then they will send your blood sample to the laboratory for testing.

Before your Cobalt Test, your doctor may ask you to avoid eating or drinking anything for 8–12 hours. They may also ask you to stop taking certain medications that can interfere with your test results. Please reach out to your healthcare provider for any specific requirements.

• X-rays or ultrasound: These tests can help detect damage or inflammation around implants caused by metal toxicity.
• Full blood count or liver function tests: This helps determine if there are any underlying medical conditions that may be causing the elevated levels of cobalt.
