Cobalt Blood Test

The Cobalt Blood Test measures the amount of cobalt in your blood.

• To evaluate the functioning of cobalt-containing implants like hip or knee prosthetics
• To test for exposure to toxic levels of cobalt
• To monitor people who work with or are exposed to cobalt-containing products
• To diagnose symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, headaches, and nausea

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have

• symptoms suggestive of cobalt toxicity or low cobalt levels,
• a history of joint replacement surgery using a cobalt-containing implant,
• a history of working with or exposure to cobalt-containing alloys or pigments, or
• other medical issues linked to cobalt toxicity.

Elevated levels could indicate that you have been exposed to toxic amounts of cobalt either through work or implant failure. Low levels could signify cobalt deficiency.

• A healthcare professional will clean the area with an antiseptic wipe.
• They will use a needle to draw blood from a vein in your arm.
• They may ask you to apply pressure on the puncture site to avoid bleeding.

• Tell your doctor about any medication or supplements you're taking or any specific requirements.
• Avoid strenuous physical activity before the test.
• Fast for at least 8 to 12 hours before the test if asked by your doctor.
• It is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to determine if there are any particular requirements you should be aware of.

• Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP): This blood test measures several substances in your blood, including electrolytes, blood sugar, protein levels, and liver function.
• Joint aspiration: This test involves removing fluid from around a joint using a needle for further testing.
