Beta-Trace protein(BTP) CSF leakage in body fluid
Also known as: BTP (Beta-Trace Protein) CSF Leakage, Body Fluid and Serum
Overview
Beta-trace protein (BTP) is a small protein that is produced in the central nervous system, primarily by oligodendrocytes. It is also present in other tissues, such as the kidneys and the eyes.. It’s levels are high in CSF, with CSF to serum ratio of 34:1 In the body, BTP is found in low levels in several body fluids, , urine, and blood plasma. CSF leakage occurs when there is an abnormal communication between the CSF and the surrounding tissue, which can be caused by several factors, including trauma, infection, or surgery. BTP can be used as a marker for CSF leakage, as it is only present in CSF and is not normally found in other body fluids. Beta trace protein is better alternate marker to beta-2 transferrin. However in cases of decreased kidney functions (low GFR) BTP levels in serum may rise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Beta-Trace protein (BTP) CSF leakage in body fluid test is commonly used in the diagnosis of CSF leaks, such as cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea (CSF leakage from the nose) or otorrhea (CSF leakage from the ear).
The BTP CSF leakage test measures the levels of BTP in various body fluids, such as blood, urine, and nasal or ear discharge.
Elevated levels of BTP in body fluids may indicate the presence of CSF leakage such as cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea (CSF leakage from the nose) or otorrhea (CSF leakage from the ear).
The sample can be collected by the doctor in different ways depending on the site of the suspected leakage:
- For nasal leakage: A cotton swab is inserted into the nostril to collect a sample of the fluid.
- For ear leakage: A sterile cotton swab is inserted into the ear canal to collect a sample of the fluid.
- For other sites of leakage: The fluid is collected using a syringe and needle.
It is important to follow any instructions provided by the healthcare professional regarding preparations for the Beta-Trace protein (BTP) CSF leakage in body fluid test.
Symptoms that may warrant this test include:
- Clear fluid drainage from the nose or ear
- Headaches that worsen when upright and improve when lying down
- Stiff neck
- Sensitivity to light
- Changes in vision or hearing
- Fatigue
- Nausea and vomiting
People who have undergone brain or spinal surgeries or procedures, such as lumbar puncture, may also require this test to detect any CSF leaks.
Depending on the patient's symptoms and medical history, other tests may be ordered along with the BTP test, such as:
- Analysis of glucose and protein levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
- Microbiology cultures to identify any infectious agents that may be causing the leakage.
