Beryllium Spot Urine Test

The Beryllium Spot Urine Test measures the amount of beryllium present in your urine sample.

• To detect beryllium exposure in people who work in industries like electronics, aerospace, nuclear power, and defence
• To diagnose beryllium poisoning or chronic beryllium disease (CBD)
• To evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for those diagnosed with beryllium poisoning or CBD
• To monitor workers who are at high risk of exposure to beryllium

The Beryllium Test is recommended for

• individuals who work in industries that involve beryllium or have a history of occupational exposure to it,
• individuals who have symptoms associated with beryllium exposure such as coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, or
• those undergoing treatment for beryllium poisoning or CBD.

Elevated levels of beryllium in urine may indicate exposure to beryllium or beryllium poisoning.

The Beryllium Test involves providing a 10 ml spot urine sample in a metal-free container. The sample is sent to a laboratory for testing using the ICPMS method. The test is quick, painless and non-invasive.

While no specific preparations are needed, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to determine if there are any particular requirements you should be aware of.

• Chest X-ray: to check for lung damage caused by exposure to beryllium.
• Blood tests: to measure metal ions in the blood and check liver and kidney function.
