This test allows laboratory to identify at-risk babies for Biotinidase Deficiency. Babies identified as deficient can remain healthy with normal development provided treatment is started early on.

This is a screening test for new-born babies usually done within 48-72 hours of birth to detect inborn errors of metabolism. Since the symptoms may not appear till months this test is performed as a part of screening test.

New-born Screening is a test that involves testing of infants at birth for certain genetically linked metabolic disorders which may affect baby’s physical, mental and intellectual development. Babies with deficiency may present with seizures, hypotonia, trouble in breathing & balancing. Biotinidase deficiency (BIOT) is an inherited condition in which the body is unable to reuse and recycle the vitamin biotin. Because the body needs free biotin to break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates effectively, individuals with BIOT are less able to process important nutrients. This test checks for Biotinidase Deficiency.
