Overview

Cladosporium is a major source of inhaled mold allergy, which means those sensitized to C. herbarum may experience symptoms after breathing in its spores. While it’s considered a seasonal outdoor mold and is found worldwide mainly on plants, in soil, and on food, it can also colonize a host of indoor surfaces. In fact, Cladosporium is among the top three most common indoor airborne fungi (along with Penicillium and Aspergillus). That said, indoor concentrations of this mold seem to increase in conjunction with rising outdoor concentrations.

An allergy to Cladosporium herbarum (Fungus) triggers a reaction in an individual's immune system. The body views certain substances as toxic and produces IgE antibodies to these contaminants. These antibodies cause histamine to be released, which will cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Mold sensitization is also a major risk factor for developing upper and lower respiratory diseases such as allergic rhinitis (aka hay fever) and allergic asthma.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to Cladosporium herbarum (Fungus)
  • Identifying allergens responsible for allergic disease and/or anaphylactic episode
  • To confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy

Common signs or symptoms of Cladosporium herbarum (Fungus) allergy may include the following:

  • Hives or skin rashes
  • Itching/swelling
  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Fast heartbeat

A severe, possibly life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis may occur in some cases. An anaphylactic response requires immediate medical attention. Signs or symptoms of anaphylaxis may include:

  • Rapid or increased pulse
  • Swollen throat or lump, making it difficult to breathe
  • Low blood pressure
  • Extreme dizziness or loss of consciousness

Specific IgE measures the concentration of circulating allergen specific IgE for micro-organism allergen Cladosporium herbarum (Fungus).

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer

Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to Cladosporium herbarum (Fungus) that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to Cladosporium herbarum (Fungus) allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
