Allergen,Individual-FoodBeta - Lactoglobulin- MilkMilk protein
Overview
Beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) is a protein found in cow's milk and a common allergen for those with milk allergies. A blood test can measure an individual's BLG specific immune response to identify a milk allergy. This test is helpful when someone experiences allergic reactions to milk but doctors need to confirm the culprit and differentiate it from lactose intolerance.
Luckily for those that are allergic to beta-lactoglobulin is that it is heat sensitive, meaning while they cannot have it cold, when it is cooked or baked the allergy is either not triggered or much more tolerable.
An allergy to b-lactoglobulin will cause a person to experience symptoms such as rash, itching, hives, swelling around the face or throat, nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and constipation when they consume milk or products containing milk. Many people develop a milk allergy early in life. Some people's allergies subside as they grow older but some persist into adulthood.

Frequently Asked Questions
Establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to Beta-Lactoglobulin (Milk protein)
- Identifying allergens responsible for allergic disease and/or anaphylactic episode
- To confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy
Common signs or symptoms of Beta-Lactoglobulin (Milk protein) allergy may include the following:
- Hives or skin rashes
- Itching/swelling (especially of the lips/face/tongue/throat)
- Severe dizziness
- Trouble breathing
- Fast heartbeat
- Digestive symptoms – cramps, stomach pain, bloating, nausea or vomiting
A severe, possibly life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis may occur in some cases. An anaphylactic response requires immediate medical attention. Signs or symptoms of anaphylaxis may include:
- Rapid or increased pulse
- Swollen throat or lump, making it difficult to breathe
- Low blood pressure
Extreme dizziness or loss of consciousness
Specific IgE measures the concentration of circulating allergen specific IgE for food allergen Beta-Lactoglobulin (Milk protein).
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
Both: Negative: < 0.35 IU/ml
Both: Positive: => 0.35 IU/ml
Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to Beta-Lactoglobulin (Milk protein) that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to Beta-Lactoglobulin (Milk protein) allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
