Overview
The Osmotic Fragility Test evaluates the resilience of your red blood cells (RBCs) when placed in a hypotonic (weaker salt) solution. Normally, RBCs are flexible and can withstand some changes in their environment. This test identifies abnormalities in RBC membranes. If the RBCs break down easily (hemolyze) in diluted saline, it suggests conditions like hereditary spherocytosis or thalassemia, where the RBCs are more fragile. This helps diagnose these blood disorders that can lead to anemia.
