AFB Rapid Culture by MGIT – CSF

This test detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB Complex) or Non-tuberculosis bacteria (NTM or MOTT) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

• This test helps diagnose infections such as tuberculosis meningitis by detecting the bacteria responsible for the infection. • To diagnose infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Non-tuberculosis bacteria in the cerebrospinal fluid. • To monitor treatment effectiveness in patients with tuberculosis meningitis. • To identify and manage other infectious diseases affecting the central nervous system.

This test may be recommended if you have • Symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis meningitis, such as severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, and altered mental status. • Risk factors for tuberculosis, such as exposure to someone with active tuberculosis or weakened immune system. • Suspicion of other infectious diseases affecting the central nervous system.

If the test results are abnormal, it may indicate an infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Non-tuberculosis bacteria in the cerebrospinal fluid. These may indicate tuberculosis meningitis or other infectious diseases affecting the central nervous system.

During the test, a sample of 2ml of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) will be collected in a sterile leak-proof tube or container.

To prepare for this test: • Ensure that proper clinical history, specimen type, site, and clinician's contact information are mentioned on the test request form. • No special preparations are required from your side before collecting the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample. • Follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

• Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT): This test detects specific genetic material from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, providing a rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis meningitis. • Drug Sensitivity Testing: If Mycobacterium tuberculosis is detected, further testing may be done to determine the most effective antibiotics for treatment.

This test is also known as the CSF TB culture test or tuberculosis meningitis culture.
