AFB Rapid Culture by Bactec Fx – Blood

This test detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB Complex) or Non-tuberculosis bacteria (NTM or MOTT) in your blood sample.

This test is mainly done to diagnose infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB Complex) or Non-tuberculosis bacteria (NTM or MOTT). Other reasons for performing this test include: • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for tuberculosis or other bacterial infections. • To determine the specific bacteria causing an infection. • To guide appropriate antibiotic therapy and treatment decisions.

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have: • Symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis, such as persistent cough, weight loss, night sweats, or fever. • A known exposure to someone with tuberculosis. • An immunocompromised condition, such as HIV/AIDS. • A confirmed diagnosis of tuberculosis or other bacterial infection. • Suspected non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection based on clinical presentation.

Abnormal results may suggest an active tuberculosis infection or another bacterial infection.

During the test: • A small sample of blood will be collected from your vein. • The blood sample will be placed in a special bottle for culture. • The bottle will be sent to the laboratory for processing and incubation.

Before the test: • No specific preparation is required. • Follow any instructions provided by your doctor regarding fasting or medication restrictions, if any. • Ensure that the specimen type, site, clinical history, and clinician number are properly mentioned on the test request form.
